Currently I’m using a VPS on Hertzer hosted in Singapore. I might try to torrent movies and games or maybe download videos in bulk using yt-dlp from youtube or maybe even porn. I want to know if its a good idea or should I use a paid vpn inside my VPS. If there is a better alternative like another VPS provider who ignores DMCA notices and stuff, do suggest. I also sync some folders using syncthing. So its kind of a mixed use. I don’t know much about networking and stuff, so hopefully nothing too complicated. Thanks in advance.
This community is about self hosting not piracy. Go ask on c/piracy
DMCA is widely abused; it’s a knee-jerk corporate reaction, and by now most DMCA notices are probably being sent out by LLMs. Very likely, a substantial percentage are not even valid - either targeting content that the requester has no claim to, is falsely identified, a form of harassment, or targeting content which is justifiably and legally fair-use.
Hosting services don’t even try to validate these claims. You assume OP is asking for piracy reasons; we have no way of knowing, but I’m always going to side with the content providers against the gross abuse of DCMA by media corporations.
Yeah illegal stuff and Singapore should never be in the same sentence.
Either move the VPS to being hosted somewhere with no interest in enforcing copyright law (Africa, South America, some parts of Asia like Cambodia, Kazakhstan etc) or put a VPN on the VPS so your IP shows as being somewhere less regulated than SGP
From a quick Lemmy search, I’ve seen Njalla and 1984.hosting being recommended for these kinds of uses.
You are probably better off asking on the piracy community.
