Lately, when booting up my linux machine (Fedora 39 KDE), everything looks good until about 30s after I log in. Then both screens go black with no output, and shortly after that they light up as if there is a signal but I don't seen anything.

Hi al, I just did a fresh install of linux mint and I don't have any audio on my internal subwoofers. Dell XPS 9500. I made a post about it on the linux mint forums, which contains more info and "progress" but no luck so far.

I'm interviewing for a software dev job currently (it's in the initial stages). If things work out, I'd absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it... (If all computers left on earth have Windows I'd either quit this field or just quit Earth).

Not choosing them, I’ve done that. I just want to make sure that I install them right and am not missing anything. What I’m doing is installing a second ssd on my desktop, and then I want to install a new distro (opensuse) on it, to use instead of my current one.

Hey folks, throwing this out for ideas. I have - like many FOSS users from what I have researched - a Logitech G13 gaming keyboard. I love this thing - it's awesome, however it doesn't work in Linux.

I got myself a valve index, as I've heard that it works well on GNU/Linux (I use Debain 12 with GNOME). Turns out, there were a bunch of hurtles. At first, my cable was just broken, so I needed to get that relaced. Later on when I got the cable, Everything worked fine, but nothinig is being displayed in the headset. The screen is just off and the frightening red lights on the front are lit. Every time I run steamVR, it doesn't give me any errors, but after about 20 seconds of waiting, these two LEDs turn from blue to red. The eye adjustment slider and even the tracking works perfeclty, as I can see the rendered image in the "VR view":

This is a short appreciation/user experience story. Tl;Dr I'm enjoying my time on linux

Hi, I have an Asus vivobook pro 16x oled (M7600QC) optimus laptop with a dedicated Nvidia RTX 3050 Max-Q rated 50w. When I try to use the dedicated Nvidia GPU on Linux, the wattage is only 35w. If I enable the "nvidia-powerd" daemon, it goes up to ~40w. Is there a way to raise the wattage to the rated 50w like on Windows?

I believe this may be a niche question but hopefully someone may have an answer.

I recently had to use windows for stuff and after a year of using Linux, it made me realise how janky windows is in comparison. Even on a top spec pc unminimized (or resized) windows flash white before their contents appear. Super-d to minimize/maximize doesn't bring all windows back up or in the same order. And these are greatly amplified when the computer isn't that powerful, so much so that you can see individual regions of some programs render one by one. In addition, moving the kde connect window sometimes made the screen stutter and flicker (???) and at some point my mouse stopped working (touchpad was fine), I tried reinstalling drivers and stuff but ultimately I had to reboot for it to work again.

I have been using Linux for about 5 years and although I don't consider that I know much, I know enough to fix my own problems and that's usually enough for me.

Hi all, I've installed Debian in 2 (mdadm RAID 1 formtted with Btrfs) NVMe drives installed into 2 PCIe adapters. The motherboard doesn't support booting from those drives, so I've installed Debian into a USB stick (and it works) and I wanted to add into grub the RAID NVMe drives.

I am on Manjaro GNOME 45.4 (x11) and after some recent update, I am unable to type for example: aa, or 77, or ANY two identical characters in a row, so it only registers the first: a, 7, etc.

I'm setting up FDE and wonders which one is better. "LVM over LUKS" or "LUKS over LVM"? Or something else? Does one is definitely better then the other? What are your preference?

I want more people to know about this big release, also to help support and spread Linux *without spending a dime*. You don't need to change your Desktop Environment or Operating Systems.

Recently bought a new laptop that comes with an AMD Radeon gpu and installed OpenSuse Tumbleweed on it which I had installed on my previous laptop as well but never had issues with suspending and resuming. However, with the new laptop, I am unable to resume after suspending or closing the lid unless I force it to shut down by holding the power button which is a major inconvenience.

I'd like to install/run Kicksecure from my "EAGET USB 3.2 Solid State Pen Drive" as described here. (Im not set on Kicksecure, just read about it on privacyguides; open for suggestions! I just want something ... well secure and easy to use.

How do i set the $LANG variable without using export? I have set my locale.conf to LANG=en_US.UTF-8 but LANG is still always set to en_US which is not valid. I'd prefer not to use .bashrc or /etc/. Thanks in advance!

Hi folks, Does anyone know how to instruct cron to carry out a command when a connection to the internet is first made after boot? I have a few jobs that only need to be done once per day and require an internet connection e.g downloading the weather forecast and my rss feeds. I'm not always connected to the internet on boot and do not have the computer switched on at the same times every day. Many thanks for any suggestions.

What is your personal preference based on experience? I Assume because Mac is Unix and Linux is Unix based, it would be more suited, but I have no personal experience with the layout. I am willing to try something new if i hear enough merits for it, and I also find the windows layout somewhat inadequate(The grass is greener on the other side /s)

Can anyone recommend a simple printer for printing 6x4 inch photos, which has open source drivers? Thanks :)

Edit: I'm no longer looking for help with this. The issue seems to be with the app itself and I have submitted a bug report for the app on github.

My grandma just gave me her old MacBook Pro (MacBookPro11,1 A1502) and, after removing a spicy pillow, air dusting everything, and copying off her old photos, I'm ready to do a clean install.

I'm trying to update my grub boot order back to booting the first option instead of the second, so I run sudo nano /etc/default/grub, but it brings up this, which is not the file I want to edit.

I'm trying to connect my Wiimote via Bluetooth to a new Minisforum UM690S running Linux Mint 21.3. I'm using this post from the ArchWiki as a reference, and I am fully able to do this successfully on my laptop (running Tuxedo OS 2) and another mini-PC running Pop_OS!

After seeing someone else posting their struggles with getting Docker running on their system, I thought I might share my process for setting up new Docker nodes. I don't make any representations about my way being the right way, or the best way, but this way has been working for me. I have been playing around with a swarm, but if you aren't setting up a swarm you can just omit the swarm commands and some of the firewall allows (keep what you need open, obviously, like 22 for SSH if you're using it). Similarly, if you aren't connecting to a NAS, you can leave out the part about mounting external storage.

The title explains it well. But I installed Mint on a 2nd partition, then deleted it since I no longer used it, and now Grub dumps me to the command line on boot :/

My elderly neighbor who is an accomplished engineer and has been using Linux for ages recently upgraded his distro. I think he is using Ubuntu or Fedora. Now whenever he prints pages every line of text has a line through it.

I installed fedora kde earlier today, hated kde, couldn't uninstall it, so reinstalled with workstation. My hostname was originally computer, but I changed it, but now I still see user@computer ~ whenever I go into a terminal? is this a problem. Gnome terminal also looks weird

I recently switched to Linux (Zorin OS) and I selected "use ZFS and encrypt" during installation. Now before I can log in it asks me "please unlock disk keystore-rpool" and I have to type in the encryption password it before I'm able to get to the login screen.

Is there a good way to roll back the nvidia driver to an older version? I need 470 for my vr headset, as newer versions seem to disable video output to the headset. I have tried some logical stuff like sudo apt remove --purge nvidia-driver and also some more radical stuff like sudo apt remove --purge "^nvidia-*" but that somehow left all my drivers intact, and I am still on the newest version 525.147.05. Does someone know on how step back?

So I heard that the zenbook 13/14 don't have any audio on linux, but then I found some reddit comment saying that a kernel update fixed it. Anyone here who uses one and can confirm that?

What the title basically says. Is there a way to read the startup logs of my OS (running openSUSE tumbleweed)? There are some errors while starting my system but can't read them since they are scrolling too fast.

I've installed gentoo but there seems like there's so many sacrifices. I love that it's all open source, but I really don't mind closed source software now and then, because after all I would be using it to play closed source games. The biggest compromise I've observed is the very long build times. I have a lukewarm cpu(i3 10100) and it's powerful enough for good gaming but the build times are still like 10x minimum for some software. All this to say, is using gentoo really worth it? I love the idea behind it, and if I was doing criminal activity I'd definitely use it, but is there some absolute upside to it or is it a really good OS for privacy that sacrifices in usability?

Welp, it's finally happened. Windows 10 has become so bloated, slow, and spooky that I finally have decided to bite the bullet and set up a VM on my linux Mint partition. Do you have any suggestions for a virtual machine? My PC is a relatively basic mid-range business laptop, 8gb of ram, no GPU, only a few years old. I'm a little concerned about performance impact, as I've heard that VMs take more system resources than the OS running natively. Any recommendations of software/configurations that would work best for me?
